Keywords

You can only begin to imagine the importance of having a strong set of keywords for your website.  As a new website owner, you probably have no clue the overall importance of those keywords, much less what they really do for your website, or the traffic that it receives.  A good set of keywords in the title, description and even the keywords area of a website can mean the difference between wasted traffic that has little to no conversion rate, and traffic that turns your site into a money making machine. Choose a list of primary keywords which you want to target & secondary list of keywords.

Picking out the right keywords for your site is important and should never be done lightly.  Spending a bit of time to really think through your selection is important.  Pretend for a moment that you are just searching the web.  What keywords would you expect to type in to find your website? Why would you use those words?  Are there any common misspellings that might be used that can be included?  Taking some time to really think about all of these aspects will help you to ensure you have a clear understanding of the type of traffic that you are looking for, as well as the best way to actually reach this traffic.

For most people, a really good set of keywords is critical; this is the driving factor behind people being able to actually find you.  It really does not matter how good your product or service is if nobody can find you.  Having a good grasp of the keywords necessary for your business is critical to getting the best impact possible for your business overall.

With the impact that keywords can have understood, you should begin to recognize as well, why it is important to use this exact same information to develop your directory listings.  Within a directory, your products are not seen, but rather your website name, and your keywords and a few brief pieces of information.  Making that limited information really count is critical to getting people to your site that are actually interested in what you have.

Stop and think a moment, if you are selling pet supplies, would you want people searching for jewelry to land at your website?  You would prefer people who are looking for pet supplies to land instead, which improves your chances of actually selling to them, because they are actively looking for what you have to offer.  This makes it much easier to turn traffic to your website into actual cash, and means targeting the right areas.
Site Titles

With a clean and clear title written for your website, you should be able to give a very concise and to the point sentence about what your website is.  For example, if you are selling pet supplies, you wouldn’t want to put “Welcome to the Home Page!”, nor would you want to include “Home of Gorgeous Jewelry!”  Instead you need to include something that actually tells what your business is and gives details for you.

Site titles you submit to the directories will be used as anchor texts in the directories. So, it is a good idea to use your primary keywords in Site Titles.

Site Description
With the website title out of the way, it is time to start focusing on the description and even the keywords.  This is critical to getting more traffic.  While the title helps to lure them in, it is extremely brief and only gives a micro view of your overall site.  Using the keywords and description carefully will help you to open that view up significantly so they are tempted into visiting to see what you have to offer.  As this all starts to fall into place, your last major task is to determine the appropriate category.

Site Categories
Website directories break sites down into categories, knowing exactly where your site fits is important since it will help with the targeting traffic concept that should be essential to your marketing plan.  By knowing where your business belongs, you can ensure that you are putting your listing where it should be, and will be seen by the greatest number of consumers, rather than off in the corner collecting virtual dust while you are frustrated by the lack of results.
